Cluster Formation in Contracting Molecular Clouds
نویسندگان
چکیده
We explore, through a simplified, semianalytic model, the formation of dense clusters containing massive stars. The parent cloud spawning the cluster is represented as an isothermal sphere. This sphere is in nearYforce balance between self-gravity and turbulent pressure. Self-gravity, mediated by turbulent dissipation, drives slow contraction of the cloud, eventually leading to a sharp central spike in density and the onset of dynamical instability. We suggest that, in a real cloud, this transition marks the late and rapid production of massive stars. We also offer an empirical prescription, akin to the Schmidt law, for low-mass star formation in our contracting cloud. Applying this prescription to the Orion Nebula Cluster, we are able to reproduce the accelerating star formation previously inferred from the distribution of member stars in the HR diagram. The cloud turns about 10% of its mass into low-mass stars before becoming dynamically unstable. Over a cloud free-fall time, this figure drops to 1%, consistent with the overall star formation efficiency of molecular clouds in the Galaxy. متن کاملSome Constraints on The Formation of Globular Clusters
We explore the constraints on globular cluster formation provided by the observed conditions in starbursts where globulars are currently forming, and by the observed properties of young and old globular clusters. We note that the pressure in the ISM of starbursts and mergers implies that molecular clouds in these environments have radii similar to those of globular clusters. Such molecular clou...
متن کاملThe Formation and Fragmentation of Primordial Molecular Clouds
Many questions in physical cosmology regarding the thermal history of the intergalactic medium, chemical enrichment, reionization, etc. are thought to be intimately related to the nature and evolution of pregalactic structure. In particular the efficiency of primordial star formation and the primordial IMF are of special interest. We present results from high resolution three–dimensional adapti...
متن کاملMolecular Clouds Towards RCW49 and Westerlund 2; Evidence for Cluster Formation Triggered by Cloud-Cloud Collision
We have made CO(J = 2− 1) observations towards the HII region RCW 49 and its ionizing source, the rich stellar cluster Westerlund 2, with the NANTEN2 sub-mm telescope. These observations have revealed that two molecular clouds in velocity ranges of −11 to +9 km s and 11 to 21 km s respectively, show remarkably good spatial correlations with the Spitzer IRAC mid-infrared image of RCW 49, as well...
متن کاملMASS Observations of the Perseus , Orion A , Orion B , and Monoceros R 2 Molecular
We use the 2MASS Second Incremental Release Point Source Catalog to investigate the spatial distribution of young stars in the Perseus, Orion A, Orion B, and MonR2 molecular clouds. After subtracting a semi-empirical model of the field star contamination from the observed star counts, stellar surface density maps are used to identify compact clusters and any stellar population found more unifor...
